World Home Economics Day 2026

21st March marks World Home Economics Day, an international event coordinated by the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE). Since its establishment in 1982, the day has highlighted the important role of Home Economics in addressing contemporary issues that affect individuals, families, and communities worldwide.

The theme for World Home Economics Day 2026 is:

“You Are What You Eat – Feeding the Future.”

This theme emphasises the vital role of nutrition across the life course. The food choices we make today influence the health and well-being of future generations. Nutrition during infancy and childhood provides the foundation for growth, learning, and long-term health, while dietary habits throughout life shape how communities age and thrive.

The theme also highlights the importance of sustainable food systems, food security, and cultural food traditions. By connecting the science of nutrition with everyday practices in homes, schools, and communities, Home Economics plays a key role in helping individuals and families make informed food choices that support both personal health and the health of the planet.

Home Economics teachers and professionals are uniquely positioned to address these challenges through education, research, and practical life skills. From teaching children essential cooking and nutrition skills to promoting sustainable food practices, the subject continues to play an important role in shaping healthier and more sustainable futures.

To support teachers in marking the occasion, ATHE has prepared World Home Economics Day posters, which are available to download in both English and Irish from the Members’ Section of the ATHE website. These posters can be displayed in classrooms and schools to help raise awareness of the theme and celebrate the importance of Home Economics education.

Members are encouraged to use the posters, discuss the theme with their students, and highlight the many ways Home Economics contributes to individual well-being and sustainable living.

Further information about the theme and resources from the International Federation for Home Economics can be found on the IFHE website:

ATHE wishes all members a happy World Home Economics Day on 21st March 2026.
